The story has you form bonds with other characters to gain new abilities, discover more about their past, and attempt to solve the various murders. If the others work out who the killer is then the individual is put to death and the game continues - if they don't everyone else dies. The only catch is that after any murder there is a trial.
The rules are simple, kill another student and don’t get caught. Makoto's goal is to survive Monokuma’s lethal game with the other 15 students. While some argue this makes him the Ultimate Lucky Student, being trapped in Hope’s Peak by the evil robot bear Monokuma suggests that he is anything but. He is part of an experiment to see if a normal kid can be elevated by studying with characters such as the Ultimate Fan Fiction Writer, Ultimate Biker Gang Leader, or Ultimate Detective. The students of Hope’s Peak all have an "ultimate" talent, but your character, Makoto, does not.
